Study Sports & Exercise Abroad

The science, coaching, business and health of sport, exercise and human movement.

Why study Sports & Exercise?

Sports and exercise study how the body moves, adapts and performs, and how sport is organised and managed. Scientific specializations such as Sport & Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Strength & Conditioning and Sports Nutrition sit alongside applied areas including Sports Coaching, Sports Psychology, Sports Management and Sports Analytics.

Students combine laboratory work in physiology, biomechanics and nutrition with practical coaching, performance testing and data analysis. Business-focused routes cover marketing, events, governance and the commercial side of sport, including Esports Management.

The subject suits students who are active, curious about performance and health, and interested in working with athletes or communities. Sport is international, from global competitions to research networks, so studying abroad can add exposure to different coaching systems, sports cultures and facilities.

Looking ahead

Sport and exercise are evolving through data. Wearable sensors, video tracking and performance analytics are now used across professional and amateur sport, and students may increasingly work with training-load data, injury-risk monitoring and performance modelling. Biomechanics is also moving out of the laboratory, with portable sensors and markerless motion capture used in everyday training environments.

Health is receiving growing attention alongside performance. Physical activity for public health, exercise as part of treatment for long-term conditions and healthy ageing connect sports science with medicine and community programmes. Community sport is also a focus of policies aimed at wellbeing and inclusion.

Other emerging areas include women's sport and sex-specific research, athlete mental health, Esports, and sustainability in sports events and facilities. Ethics and integrity, including safeguarding, anti-doping and fair competition, remain important themes for anyone working in sport.
