Study Engineering Abroad

Applying mathematics and science to design, build and improve the machines, structures, systems and processes that society relies on.

Why study Engineering?

Engineering turns scientific principles into working solutions. The subject covers established disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, alongside specialist areas including Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics and Nuclear Engineering.

Most programmes begin with a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, materials, thermodynamics, electronics and computing before students specialise. Design projects, laboratory work and team-based problem-solving are central, and students learn to balance performance, cost, safety and environmental impact.

Engineering suits students who enjoy mathematics and physics and like understanding how things work. It is an international discipline with shared scientific foundations, and professional recognition of degrees is supported by agreements such as the Washington Accord. It is worth checking whether a programme is accredited for the country where you plan to work.

Career pathways

Depending on the discipline and professional registration, career pathways can include:

  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Civil Engineer
  • Structural Engineer
  • Electrical Engineer
  • Electronics Engineer
  • Chemical and Process Engineer
  • Aerospace Engineer
  • Biomedical Engineer
  • Automotive Engineer
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Control and Automation Engineer
  • Energy Engineer
  • Materials Engineer
  • Project Engineer
  • Engineering Manager

Pathways depend on the specialization, qualification, country and experience. No particular outcome is implied.

Industries

  • Infrastructure & Construction Transport, water, energy and building projects delivered by consultancies and contractors.
  • Manufacturing & Industrial Automation Factories and technology providers designing products, production lines and control systems.
  • Automotive & Mobility Vehicle makers and suppliers working on powertrains, electric vehicles and driver assistance.
  • Aerospace & Defence Aircraft, engine, space and defence programmes with demanding design and testing requirements.
  • Energy & Utilities Power generation and transmission, renewables, nuclear, oil and gas, and water utilities.
  • Chemicals & Process Industries Chemical, pharmaceutical, food and materials plants that rely on process engineering.
  • Electronics & Telecommunications Semiconductor, electronics and network companies designing hardware and communication systems.
  • Medical Technology Companies developing devices, implants and diagnostic equipment.

Employers

Engineers work across organisations such as:

  • Siemens
  • Bosch
  • ABB
  • Schneider Electric
  • Jacobs
  • Bechtel
  • BASF
  • Toyota
  • Caterpillar

Looking ahead

Engineering is evolving through the transition to low-carbon energy and transport. Students may increasingly encounter electrification, battery and hydrogen technologies, the grid integration of renewables and the redesign of industrial processes to reduce emissions, linking many disciplines with Renewable Energy Engineering and Energy Engineering.

Digital engineering is another major shift. Simulation, digital twins, Automation Engineering, robotics and AI-assisted design are changing how products and infrastructure are developed and maintained, and software skills are becoming part of most engineering roles.

Areas receiving growing attention include circular design and materials reuse, resilient infrastructure for a changing climate, advanced manufacturing and medical technology. Engineers who can communicate across disciplines and weigh ethics, safety and sustainability alongside technical performance may be well placed as these areas develop.
