Study Science Abroad

Physics, chemistry, biology and the earth and space sciences: understanding the natural world through observation, experiment and theory.

Why study Science?

Science covers the fundamental disciplines that explain how the natural world works. It includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, together with fields that build on them, such as Biochemistry, Materials Science, Forensic Science, Astrophysics and Geophysics.

Students learn the scientific method in practice: designing experiments, collecting and analysing data, building models and communicating results. Laboratory and fieldwork, programming and statistics are part of most programmes, and final-year research projects give experience of open-ended investigation.

A science degree suits students who are curious about why things happen and comfortable with mathematics and careful, detailed work. Research is highly international, with collaborations, conferences and large facilities shared across countries, so studying science abroad can offer access to different research groups, equipment and approaches.

Career pathways

Depending on the discipline and level of study, career pathways can include:

  • Research Scientist
  • Laboratory Scientist
  • Physicist
  • Chemist
  • Analytical Chemist
  • Materials Scientist
  • Geoscientist
  • Forensic Scientist
  • Environmental Scientist
  • Quality Control Scientist
  • Data Analyst
  • Patent Examiner
  • Science Teacher
  • Science Communicator

Pathways depend on the specialization, qualification, country and experience. No particular outcome is implied.

Industries

  • Research & Higher Education Universities, research institutes and large facilities carrying out fundamental and applied research.
  • Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology Companies discovering, developing and testing medicines and biological products.
  • Chemicals & Materials Businesses developing chemicals, polymers, catalysts, batteries and advanced materials.
  • Energy & Earth Resources Organisations working on energy, geology, geophysics and natural resources.
  • Space & Astronomy Space agencies, observatories and companies building instruments and analysing space data.
  • Environmental & Public Agencies Bodies monitoring air, water, climate, geology and public health.
  • Forensic & Testing Services Laboratories providing analysis for legal, quality and safety purposes.
  • Science Education & Communication Schools, museums, publishers and media explaining science to the public.

Employers

Scientists work across organisations such as:

  • CERN
  • NASA
  • European Space Agency
  • Max Planck Society
  • European Southern Observatory
  • United States Geological Survey
  • Johnson Matthey
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific

Looking ahead

Science is evolving through the growing role of computation and data. Students may increasingly use machine learning, simulation and high-performance computing alongside traditional experiments, which makes programming and data skills relevant across physics, chemistry and biology.

Areas receiving growing attention include quantum science and technology, Nanotechnology, new materials for batteries and clean energy, and climate and Earth system science. In the life and chemical sciences, genomics, synthetic biology and green chemistry are opening new directions.

Research is also becoming more open and collaborative, with shared datasets, large international facilities and greater attention to reproducibility and research ethics. Students who combine a core scientific discipline with computing, statistics or communication skills may find these combinations useful in both research and industry.
